Belarus

The republic of Belarus is a small beautiful country. It is situated in Eastern Europe. The republic borders on Russia, the Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. It has an area of 207,000 square kilometers and a population of about 10 million.

Belarus is a broad plain. But there are hills on its territory. The highest one is Dzierzhinsky hill.There are 3000 rivers in Belarus.They flow into the Baltic Sea or the Black Sea. The longest of them are the Dnieper, the Neman the Western Dvina, the Pripyat, the Sozh, the Bug.

Belarus is a lake country. There are about 10,000 lakes. The largest is Lake Naroch.

Belarus is famous for its swamps. They are even entered into the Guinness book of Records.

The real treasure of Belarus lies in its forests. Large and small old and new they cover a third of the country. The largest and the oldest forests have become national parks and reserves. They are Belovezhskaya Puscha, Nalibokskaya Puscha, Braslavsky and Narochansky national Parks. Here you can enjoy the rarest examples of Belarusian nature.

The climate of Belarus is moderately continental. The breathing of the Baltic sea is constantly felt here.

Nowadays Belarus is a country of developed industry, education and culture. Its biggest enterprises produce tractors and lorries, refrigerators and TV-sets. It exports potassium salt, tractors, electronics, products of light industry.

There are about 30 higher educational establishments in the Republic. The country has more than 30 professional theatres.

Theatres: the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Yanka Kupala State Academic Theatre, the Gorky Drama Russian Theatre, the Theatre of Musical Comedy.
