Appearance and character

  1. Let’s talk about appearance and character. Describe a person you know well.

Beauty may have fair leaves, but bitter fruit. As I see it, this is about appearances and characters.

To my mind appearances sometimes may be deceptive, but not always. Of course, practically everyone has met at least someone whose character and appearance differ radically. And still we are captivated by stereotypes. When we watch films we expect positive heroes to be tall, well-built and handsome or beautiful and slender. They are supposed to be brave and strong-willed.

Negative characters should be weak and small, with an ugly face, hooked nose and pointed chin.

In ordinary life intelligent, kind, generous and cheerful people do not necessarily have good looks. Similarly stupid, impolite people are not necessarily unattractive. Nature likes to play tricks on us, and we may consider it as a present on the part of nature. Life becomes not a boring routine, but a brilliant kaleidoscope of characters and appearances which often clash.

The person I know pretty well is I am.

  • So, to begin with I should say that I am a boy of 16 with dark hair and blue eyes. I am fairly tall, but not of a very powerful built.

Now a few words about my character and interests. My friends say that I’m sociable, honest, helpful and cheerful. But my parents and my teachers sometimes say that I am stubborn and hard to deal with, but I don’t think I am. Sometimes I lose my temper but never have a grudge against anybody. I am fond of sports. At present I hardly have any time to do it since I have been extremely busy preparing for entrance exams to the university. Of course I would be more than happy if I did well and my dream come true. That’s all I can say about myself.

  • I am a girl. I have turned 17 this year and I am a school-leaver.

When I look at myself in the mirror I see a blond girl with short straight hair, dark eyes and a slender figure.

I’m sociable, so I have got a lot of friends among my schoolmates, I appreciate people’s honesty, kindness, sense of justice and intelligence. I don’t like it when people are rude and aggressive.

I’m stubborn at times. But to my mind being persistent is not always a bad thing. It means as well that I make everything possible to achieve my aim, I never leave things half-done.

I haven’t got any special hobby, but I like listening to music and communicating with my friends. We often spend time together. That’s all I can say about myself.

  1. What traits of character do you dislike in people? Why?

I appreciate people’s honesty, kindness, justice and intelligence. I can’t bear  when people tell lie. I can’t rely on such people because they can betray others in any moment. I’m proud that my friends always tell the truth and I can absolutely rely on them. It’s important for me to be honest both with myself and with people who know me. I fully agree that “honesty is the best policy”. I also dislike when people are rude and aggressive.

  1. Ask a British teenager what British people are like?
  1. What are the main national characteristics of British people?
  2. Are the British individualists?
  3. What is your favourite saying about the British?
  1. A girl/ a boy wants to change something about the way she/ he looks like. Give her/ him a piece of advice on how she/ he can do it.

Every person has its individuality, but sometimes we want to change something in our life. To my mind it is necessary to think twice not to make a mistake and of course, to consult with a specialist. It’s better to start with small changes such as new clothes or hair-colour and partially change something else.

  1. Foreign people usually admit that Belarusian people seldom smile. Do you share this point of view?

The people of Belarus are kind, friendly and good-humoured. The patience and peacefulness of the Belarusian people has been determined by the nation’s history that has been determined by the nation’s history that has been darkened by endless wars. But I can’t agree with foreigners on this question. Belarusian people smile a lot and we laugh from the heart.
